The BVI Tourist Board describes the territory as an archipelago of more than 50 isles. Tortola is the capital and largest island; Virgin Gorda is home to The Baths, where granite boulders form sheltered sea pools at the beach's edge; Jost Van Dyke is known for its Bubbly Pool; and Anegada is the only coral island in the volcanic Virgin Islands chain, nearly flat and surrounded by reef.

Our charter collection lists the British and US Virgin Islands as one cruising area, so a yacht shown here may have its listed base in the BVI — for example at Nanny Cay on Tortola — in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, or further afield. Moving between the two territories means clearing customs and immigration; your advisor confirms positioning and the quote for your dates.

Cruising grounds

Where a BVI yacht charter takes you

Tortola

The capital and largest island, with Road Town and West End both serving as sea ports of entry. Many charters embark on Tortola.

Virgin Gorda and The Baths

Virgin Gorda's best-known stop is The Baths, a national park where granite boulders form sheltered sea pools along the shore. St. Thomas Bay on Virgin Gorda is also a port of entry.

Jost Van Dyke

Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke is a port of entry, and the island's Bubbly Pool is one of its best-known natural features.

Anegada

The only coral island in the Virgin Islands chain, nearly flat and surrounded by reef — a different landscape from the volcanic islands, and an approach your captain plans carefully.

Planning notes for the BVI

Customs and immigration

All vessels entering the BVI must clear Customs and Immigration immediately on arrival at a port of entry, with valid passports and the boat's registration papers. Yachts that visit the US Virgin Islands must clear in again on return.

US or British Virgin Islands base

Some yachts in this collection are listed in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Starting there is possible, with clearance into the BVI on arrival; your advisor confirms the plan.

Hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Many yachts reposition seasonally, so availability is confirmed for your exact dates.

Yes, if the yacht arrives from outside the territory. All vessels entering the BVI must clear Customs and Immigration immediately on arrival at a port of entry — Road Town or West End on Tortola, Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke, or St. Thomas Bay on Virgin Gorda — with valid passports and the boat's registration papers.

Yes. Some yachts in our collection are listed in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands. The yacht clears BVI Customs and Immigration on arrival, and must clear in again if it returns to the BVI after visiting the US Virgin Islands.

Anegada is the only coral island in the volcanic Virgin Islands chain. It is nearly flat and surrounded by coral reefs, so it looks and feels quite different from Tortola, Virgin Gorda or Jost Van Dyke.

Winter and spring are the main charter period. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, and many yachts reposition during those months.
