On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse will cross the Balearic Sea \u2014 the first visible from Mallorca since 1905. The path of totality passes directly over the waters between Mallorca and Ibiza, making a yacht the single best vantage point for this once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event.
Why Watch from a Yacht?
A total solar eclipse demands an unobstructed horizon in every direction. On land, buildings, mountains, and crowds limit the experience. From a yacht anchored in open water, you have a full 360° view of the sky, the horizon, and the approaching shadow. You can also reposition to the exact centre of the path of totality \u2014 something no land-based observer can do.
The other advantage is practical: the Balearic Islands will see an enormous influx of visitors for the eclipse. Hotels, restaurants, and roads will be at capacity. On a yacht, you avoid the crowds entirely while enjoying the best possible viewing conditions.
The Science
Totality begins at approximately 19:42 local time and lasts between 1 minute 45 seconds and 2 minutes 15 seconds, depending on your exact position. The sun will be low on the western horizon (about 15° altitude), which creates a particularly dramatic visual effect as the shadow sweeps across the sea.
During totality, the solar corona \u2014 the sun\u2019s outer atmosphere \u2014 becomes visible as a pearly white halo. Stars and planets appear in the darkened sky. The temperature drops noticeably, and the light takes on an eerie, twilight quality that is unlike any other natural phenomenon.
Optimal Viewing Position
The centre line of totality crosses the sea approximately 20\u201330 nautical miles southeast of Palma. Our navigation team has plotted the optimal anchoring positions based on the eclipse geometry, prevailing August weather patterns, and sea state forecasts. We recommend departing Palma in the early afternoon and positioning by 18:00 to allow time for the partial phases before totality.
What to Bring
- ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses \u2014 essential for viewing the partial phases before and after totality. Regular sunglasses are not safe.
- Binoculars with solar filters \u2014 for detailed views of sunspots during the partial phase. Remove filters only during totality.
- Camera with telephoto lens \u2014 a 200\u2013400mm lens captures the corona well. Use a solar filter until totality.
- Warm layer \u2014 the temperature drop during totality is noticeable, even in August.
